Tug 2

Wreck Dive, Sliema, Malta

Tug Boat 2 is the most recent wreck around the Maltese islands, located offshore Exiles in Sliema, northeast of Malta. Tug 2 was a tugboat working in Grand Harbour of Valletta. She was sunk in June 2013 to form an artificial reef for both scuba and freediving.

The wreck lies about 250 meters north of Exiles, Sliema. The tug 2 was originally sunk on the sand parallel with the reef.

In October 2016 a storm had pushed it onto the reef of Exiles. The length of the wreck is about 30 meters and lies in a depth of 22 meters. The wreck is great for wreck penetration and for the Wreck Specialty course. The engine room is great to learn how to lay lines and for learning how to navigate inside of a wreck through different levels. The wheel house makes for great "Captain" photographs for all the excited new divers.

Tug 2 is one of the few shallow wreck dives in Malta, suitable for Open Water Divers or higher. The wreck is a great training wreck for your PADI Wreck Specialty and a perfect way to end off your Open Water Courses final Dive

The Marine Life

On this wreck, the chance that you find a lot of Nudibranchs is really high. So when diving the Tug 2, bring your camera if you’re a fan of marine life. Around the Tug 2, you will find flying gurnards in the sand, or cuttlefish along the reef.

In summer, when there is the large Yellow Buoys, there is always a possibility to find baby trigger fish playing around the rope and swimming between the divers bubbles.

Experience Needed

You must be certified to dive to a depth of 18 meters to dive this site. We would also recommend being a Nitrox Diver.
