Cave Dive, Żebbuġ, Gozo
Billinghurst Cave is located on Gozo's north coast. Entering the water requires a giant stride, which is preferable to the long climb down the ladder. Railings are installed to guide divers to the entry point, and a ladder near the cave can be used to exit the water.
Descending into the crystal-clear blue waters and entering the cave, you can find many shrimp on the reef. A torch is required as there is zero natural light in the cave. Pre-set lines are laid out for divers to make their way in and out.
Towards the end of the cave, there is an air pocket to explore. Care must be taken here, as the entrance to the cave is around 26 metres deep, so safety stops must be completed before surfacing inside the cave. Upon exiting, the dive can be continued along the reef to explore the large boulders just outside the cave, or along the wall towards Reqqa Point. Due to its exposed position on the north coast, the site is heavily affected by the weather. However, whenever the water is calm, it is a very popular dive site.
Experience needed
This is a true cave dive: for a significant portion of the penetration, no exit or light zone can be seen. Overhead environment or technical training is therefore required, such as a Tec 40 or cave diver certification.
