Reef Dive, Ghajnsielem, Gozo
Ras il-Hobz, also known as "Middle Finger Reef", is located on the south coast of Gozo. It is a single pinnacle rising from the depths. As the seaward side of the pinnacle descends to around 90+ metres, this is a great dive for technical divers, but as the top of the "fingers" reaches just 10m from the surface, the site can be enjoyed by recreational divers too. The narrow channel between the pinnacle and the shore bottoms out at 35 metres deep.
The nearby reef on the west side of Ras il-Hobz is just 5 metres deep, excellent for deco and safety stops, or simply for exploring the shallow waters with plenty of life and light.
As you swim around the pinnacle, the marine life is extraordinary. The top of the pinnacle splits into five "peaks", giving it its namesake shape. You may find moray eels, octopuses, lobsters, amberjacks, barracuda, and more. If you love marine life, Ras il-Hobz is a dive site for you.
Experience needed
This site can be dived with an Open Water certification, although we recommend a minimum of Advanced Open Water to get the most out of the channel around the pinnacle. If going beyond 18m, we also recommend Nitrox.
