Reef Dive, Santa Marija Caves, Comino
The Santa Marija Caves are among the most scenic dives in the Maltese Islands, found on the northern side of Comino.
It is a very popular dive site with crystal-clear waters and incredible caverns. There are at least 10 caves known today which divers can explore. Each has its own distinct feature, such as the "Z"-shaped cave. Some offer swim-throughs and underwater tunnels, while others have beautiful blue water framing their entrances. For underwater photographers, this is a playground not to be missed!
Because this dive is relatively shallow and there is so much to see, dives can easily last 60 minutes or more. These caves are not only ideal for divers, but also for snorkellers, since most of the caves are quite shallow (maximum depth 8 metres), with air spaces above. One of the caves even has tunnels which can be walked through.
The caverns and swim-throughs
The caverns make for a stunning dive, with views of the light zone at all times. Light streams through the cracks and openings in the cavern roof, creating great opportunities for photographers and videographers. Torches are still recommended to bring out the closer features in the rocks and for spotting marine life.
Experience needed
You must be certified to dive to a depth of 18 metres to dive this site. We would require a minimum of Open Water Diver certification. We would also recommend a Nitrox Diver certification due to the possible length of the dives.
