Reef Dive, Dwejra, Gozo
The Blue Hole is in front of where the Azure Window used to be, at the bottom of Dwejra Point. It is a shore dive reached via a fairly difficult walk over rough coralline limestone, however, steps have been carved into the rocks leading down to the Blue Hole.
This natural rock formation has been carved out over the centuries by wind and waves, dropping to a depth of 16 metres. The rocky arch around the hole reaches one metre above sea level and is no more than 10 metres across.
Once at the bottom of the Blue Hole, a huge archway on one side leads to the open sea. On the other side, a large cave can be found (which requires a torch to explore).
The Blue Hole is very close to the equally famous Inland Sea, making an excellent pairing for a two-dive day.
The chimney
The chimney is a large fissure in the almost vertical cliff face. Going up and through the chimney opens up at the Coral Gardens; a series of shallow bowls full of life, with a depth of around 6 metres.
Below the coral gardens, another even larger cave can be found at a depth of around 30 metres, nicknamed "Coral Cave".
Throughout the dive, various species of fish, octopuses, starfish, and fireworms can be seen. Keep an eye out in the blue, as the occasional tuna can be spotted hunting the large shoals of damselfish and bream that can also be found here.
The Azure Peaks
In March 2017, the Azure Window came crashing down in a storm. The massive rocks and boulders have since created the "Azure Peaks", a mini underwater mountain range offering excellent swim-throughs and tunnels all the way down to 40 metres and beyond. A sight not to be missed.
Experience needed
A minimum of Open Water Diver certification is required to dive the Blue Hole, chimney, and coral gardens. However, we recommend being able to dive to a depth of 30 metres to get the most out of this site. As such, we recommend Advanced Open Water and Nitrox Diver certifications.
